Alcohol-Abuse Social Disaster

Drinking alcoholic beverages has two sides: one pleasant and the other miserable. Drinking alcohol can make the heart rejoice understated, says the Bible. (Psalm 104: 15) However, the Bible also warns that misuse can be harmful or even deadly, like the bite of a venomous snake. (Proverbs 23:31, 32) Let us examine the amount of loss due to alcohol abuse.

"A drunk driver hit a 25-year-old mother with her son who was two years old on Saturday. , , , The young mother, who was six months pregnant, died on Sunday. Her son, who suffered head injuries, is in critical condition, "reported the newspaper Le Monde. Sadly, the event was not a rare occurrence. Maybe there is someone you know who are victims of an accident due to alcohol abuse. Every year, thousands of people were killed or injured in road accidents related to alcohol.

Fatalities
Across the world, fatalities due to alcohol abuse innumerable. In France, alcohol abuse is the third leading cause of death, after cancer and coronary heart disease, directly or indirectly kill 50,000 people each year. This amount "equal to the number of casualties caused by the collapse of two or three jumbo jets every week", according to a study conducted by the Ministry of Health of France.

Fatalities due to alcohol is particularly high among young people. According to a report published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2001, alcohol is the leading cause of death among young people in Europe aged 15 to 29 years. Predicted that soon in some Eastern European countries, misuse of alcohol will kill 1 out of every 3 young men there.

Violence and Sexual Assault
Alcohol contributes to acts of violence. Drinking alcohol can make a person lose self-restraint and self-control in public and may obscure the way he interpreted the actions of others, so he is more likely to respond with violence.

Alcohol big influence on the acts of domestic violence and sexual assault. A French study of inmates mentioned the possibility that alcohol contributes to two-thirds of rapes and other attacks that are not obscene. The survey shows that in Poland, 75 percent of wives of alcoholics have been victims of violence, said the magazine Polityka. A medical study estimates that "the use of alcohol is associated with an average two-fold risk of becoming victims of homicide in all age groups and that [even] nondrinkers people who live with alcohol users were more at risk of becoming victims of homicide" .- Doctors Association American, Board of Scientific Affairs.

Social losses
When calculated damages of health costs and insurance costs and lost productivity due to accident, illness, or premature death, financial loss for the community is really surprising. That said, as a result of alcohol abuse, domestic Ireland with a population of four million people suffered losses at least one billion dollars a year. A source quoted in The Irish Times said that the amount is worth the "price of a hospital, a sports stadium, and a new jet for every Minister per year". In 1998, the Mainichi Daily News reported that the economic losses due to excessive drinking in Japan worth "more than 55 billion dollars a year". A report to the US Congress stated, "Estimates of economic losses resulting from alcohol abuse is 184.6 billion dollars in 1998, or about 638 dollars for every man, woman, and children living in the United States that year." And how about the psychological harm suffered by families apart or mourning as well as the educational or career interrupted?
